What is the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive framework for regulating artificial intelligence. It establishes a common set of rules around the safe, transparent and responsible development and use of AI, with the combined aim of supporting innovation and building trust.
The Act takes a risk-based approach, that categorises how AI technology is used and the level of risk it presents. The AI Office of Ireland is an independent statutory body established under the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026 to coordinate the implementation of the Act, along with National Competent Authorities that will oversee the use of AI within specific sectors.
What does it mean for your business?
If your company develops, sells, distributes or uses AI within the European Union you must comply with the EU AI Act. The first step is to identify any AI tools, software or systems that are used in your business and determine which risk category they fall under. It’s also important to check that you are not using any practices that are prohibited by the Act. This will help you understand how the Act applies to your organisation and help create responsible policies around the use of AI.
