Commission for Railway Regulation

The CRR is an independent regulatory body reporting to the Minister for Transport, functioning as Ireland's National Safety and Competent Authority for rail transport, licensing, and market access. To manage its expanding mandate, the commission established the Cybersecurity, Critical Infrastructure, and Artificial Intelligence (CCIAI) division, enhancing the digital and physical resilience of essential rail transport services.

Under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 and the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2026, the CRR acts as the Market Surveillance Authority for cableways and is preparing for expanded responsibilities regarding AI in the rail sector, ensuring high-risk rail transport systems meet safety standards.
